TREATMENT AS PREVENTION

There is good evidence that being on effective HIV treatment reduces (but probably does not eliminate) the risk of transmitting HIV to sexual partners. However, there have not yet been enough studies to quantify exactly how much risk reduction occurs in all situations where transmission is possible.

Condoms are still the safest way to avoid passing on or getting HIV.

Australia has implemented a series of new policies and programs to revitalise our response to HIV, including Increased testing rates, earlier initiation of HIV treatment and the use of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for individuals at high risk.

The Albion Centre is proud to join @PreventionAC #UequalsU movement to declare people on effective HIV treatment can’t pass it on through sex.

20 years of accumulating evidence/research has shown that, the risk of HIV transmission from a person living with HIV (PLWH) who is adherent to treatment and has had an undetectable viral load (VL) for more than 6 months is negligible to non-existent .

The Albion Centre is proud to endorse the  “Undetectable Equals Untransmittable” (U=U) consensus statement produced by the Prevention Access Campaign:

“People living with HIV on ART with an undetectable viral load in their blood have a negligible risk of sexual transmission of HIV.  Depending on the drugs employed it may take as long as six months for the viral load to become undetectable. Continued and reliable HIV suppression requires selection of appropriate agents and excellent adherence to treatment. HIV viral suppression should be monitored to assure both personal health and public health benefits.”

(For the purposes of this statement, an undetectable is defined as <200 copies/ml, which is also the measurement for viral suppression.)

NOTE: An undetectable/ suppressed HIV viral load only prevents HIV transmission to sexual partners. Condoms also help prevent HIV transmission as well as other STIs and pregnancy. The choice of HIV prevention method may be different depending upon a person’s sexual practices, circumstances and relationships. For instance, if someone is having sex with multiple partners or in a non-monogamous relationship,  might consider using condoms to prevent other STIs.
